Sydney winters are mild but wet and grey, and that is exactly the weather mould and moss love. Shaded walls stay damp for days, south facing roofs never fully dry out, and leaf litter sits in gutters turning to sludge. Around Castle Hill and Baulkham Hills the clay soil holds moisture, so the north side of a house can look fine while the south side turns green. A short winter checklist keeps small problems from becoming expensive repairs. Ongoing upkeep is what our home care in Sydney plans are built for.

Start with the gutters before the storms

Winter brings sudden downpours, and blocked gutters overflow straight down your walls or back into the eaves. If you have not cleared them since autumn, the leaf load from surrounding trees will already be sitting there wet. Book a clean before the first big front rolls through. Our guide on how often to clean gutters in Sydney explains the timing, and our gutter cleaning in Sydney team can clear and flush the lot in one visit.

  • Check downpipes actually run clear, not just the gutter trough
  • Look for rust lines or sagging brackets that winter rain will worsen
  • Clear valleys and box gutters where leaves pile up
  • Watch for overflow stains on the fascia and render below

Treat moss and lichen on the roof

Hills District and Northern Beaches: dense rooflines, plenty of work to do.

South facing roof faces and anything under tree cover grow moss and lichen through the cooler months. Left alone, that growth lifts tile edges, holds water against the surface and works into the bedding. Do not blast it with a pressure washer, which strips the surface and pushes water under the tiles. A proper roof treatment kills the growth at the root so it lifts away over the following weeks. Read how to remove lichen from a roof in Sydney for the safe method, then book a roof cleaning in Sydney visit if it has taken hold.

Soft wash damp and mouldy walls

A weekend is enough time to reset the whole exterior of a typical Sydney home.

That grey green film on the shaded side of the house is mould and algae feeding on winter damp. It stains render, eats into paint and makes the whole place look tired. High pressure just drives water into the wall. Soft washing uses a gentle detergent that kills the growth and rinses clean without forcing moisture behind the render. It is the right call for painted brick, weatherboard and rendered walls alike. See our soft washing in Sydney service for how we handle delicate surfaces.

Make paths and driveways safe

Commercial-grade pressure cleaning is a different beast to a hardware-store washer.

Slippery paths are the sneaky winter risk. Algae and moss build up on shaded concrete, pavers and sandstone, and after a light drizzle they get slick enough to put someone on the ground. Older Castle Hill streets with sandstone paths are especially prone to it. A pressure clean strips the growth back and gives you grip again. Our pressure cleaning in Sydney crew can do the driveway, paths and steps in one run so the whole approach to the house is safe.

Work through the list in order and your place will ride out the wet season without any nasty surprises. If you would rather hand the whole lot to one crew, get in touch with our team and we will build a winter plan around your home. When you are ready for a price, send your details through our free quote form and we will sort it the same day.
