How to Clean Solar Panels in Sydney: The 2026 Owner's Guide

Why dirty solar panels cost you real money

Most Sydney solar systems lose 5-25% of their generation capacity to dirt, dust, salt and bird droppings within 12 months of install. The Hills District in particular sits in the path of westerly winds that carry red dust from the inland, and homes near eucalypts get sticky honeydew residue from gum trees that bonds to glass and creates a perfect substrate for mould. Coastal suburbs (Manly, Cronulla, Northern Beaches) get salt spray that crystallises on panel surfaces.

On a 6.6 kW system generating around 9,000 kWh per year in Sydney, a 15 percent efficiency loss is roughly 1,350 kWh per year. That translates to a meaningful chunk of feed-in tariff and self-consumption you are leaving on the roof every year. A scheduled clean is a small investment compared to the energy you are losing to dust, bird droppings and pollen.

How to tell if your solar panels need cleaning

Most homeowners do not actually know their panels are filthy because they cannot see them. Here are the four reliable signals:

1. Your daily generation is down compared to the same week last year. Open your solar monitoring app (SolarEdge, Enphase, Fronius, Tesla, Sungrow) and compare. A drop of more than 10% with no new shading is almost always dirt.
2. Visible discolouration on the panels from ground level. Step back 20 metres and look. Streaks, dark patches near the lower edge of each panel, or a chalky film all signal a clean is overdue.
3. Bird activity on the roof. If you have noticed cockatoos, magpies or pigeons hanging out on your roof, panels are getting hit.
4. It has been more than 12 months since the last clean. Most installers do not include cleaning in handover, so this often dates back to the install itself.

Why rain does not clean your solar panels

This is the single biggest myth we hear. Rain does the opposite of cleaning. It deposits a thin layer of dissolved minerals, suspended particulate, and (in Sydney) traces of urban pollutants onto the panel surface. As the water evaporates in the sun, those particles dry on the glass, creating a hazy film that compounds month after month. Most panels are tilted at 20-30 degrees to match the local latitude, which is not steep enough for rain to sluice off heavy soiling. After a year of unwashed Sydney weather, what looks like clean glass is actually a permanent-set film of sediment.

How to clean solar panels safely (the DIY method)

What you need

• Soft brush head (microfibre or natural bristle, NOT abrasive) with a telescopic pole that reaches your panels from a stable surface
• 5-10 litres of deionised or distilled water (Bunnings sells DI water for car detailing, a few dollars per 5L)
• Garden hose with a flow regulator, NOT a pressure washer
• Soft squeegee on a pole for finishing
• Closed shoes with grip and a fall-arrest harness if you have to be on the roof

What NOT to use

• Pressure washers. The water jet can crack the seals around each panel, voiding the manufacturer warranty.
• Detergents, dish soap, glass cleaner. They leave residue that attracts more dust.
• Abrasive sponges, scouring pads, steel wool. Permanent micro-scratches reduce efficiency.
• Tap water. Sydney tap water is hard and leaves visible mineral spots once dry.
• Cold water on a hot panel. Thermal shock can crack the glass.

Step by step

1. Pick the right time. Cool overcast morning, no wind, panels not in direct sun. 6-9am works perfectly in Sydney summer; any time of day works in winter.
2. Shut down the system. Switch off the AC isolator (in the meter box) and the DC isolator (on the roof or near the inverter). Wait 5 minutes for capacitors to discharge.
3. Pre-rinse with the hose, no pressure. Just enough flow to lift loose dust and bird droppings.
4. Soft-brush each panel from the bottom up. Use slow horizontal strokes with light pressure. Do not press hard, the brush is just lifting film, not scrubbing.
5. Rinse with deionised or distilled water, pole-fed if you have it, hose-fed otherwise. The DI water dries spot-free.
6. Squeegee the bottom edge if you can reach safely. Stops the dirty rinse water leaving a brown line at the bottom of each panel.
7. Power back on. AC isolator first, then DC. Watch the inverter come back to life and check generation is normal in your monitoring app.

How often should you clean solar panels in Sydney?

There is no universal answer. Cleaning frequency depends on three things: where you live, what surrounds your house, and how steep your panel tilt is. Here is a guide we use for our Sydney service area:

How much does professional solar panel cleaning cost in Sydney?

For a standard Sydney residential system in 2026, expect:

• Single-storey 6.6 kW system (16 to 20 panels) - usually a 1 hour job
• Double-storey 10 kW system (24 to 28 panels) - usually 1.5 to 2 hours
• Acreage or split-array (30 plus panels across multiple rooflines) - half day
• Strata blocks with rooftop solar - quoted per panel with bulk discount
• Commercial warehouse arrays (100 plus panels) - quoted per kW

That is roughly the cost of one to two months of lost generation on a 15% soiled system. Most Sydney homeowners get the cleaning fee back in feed-in tariff within 60 days. Common Sydney solar cleaning mistakes (we see these every week)

1. Cleaning during the heat of the day. Cold water on hot glass causes micro-cracks in cells.
2. Using dish soap. Leaves film, attracts dust within a week.
3. Using tap water. Calcium in Sydney water dries to white spots that need re-cleaning.
4. Standing on the panels. Even a moment of weight cracks the laminate. The micro-cracks cause hot spots that destroy cells over time.
5. Pressure washing. Voids the manufacturer warranty.
6. Cleaning without shutting the system down. Live DC voltage from a wet panel is a real risk.
7. Skipping the bottom edge. Dirt accumulates at the bottom rail because rain runs to it. The dirty bottom 5cm is what people most commonly miss.
8. Using a wire brush or a stiff bristle scrub brush. Permanent scratches.
9. Hiring a roof tile cleaner who 'also does panels' but uses pressure washing or chlorine. Both kill the panels.

What about waterless or robotic solar cleaning?

Drone-based and robotic solar cleaning is starting to appear in commercial Australia, mostly on solar farms and large warehouse arrays where pole work is unsafe or impractical. For typical Sydney residential systems, drone cleaning is overkill and three-to-five times the price of a manual clean. Robotic cleaning rigs (like Ecoppia or SolarCleano) are excellent for 1MW+ commercial sites but not residential. For now, a trained human with a pole and DI water is the gold standard for homes.

Bird droppings, lichen and other special cases

Bird droppings are the worst single cause of localised hot spots on panels. They are highly opaque, they cover whole cells, and they bake on in summer heat. If you see white spots on your panels, do not wait for the next routine clean. Soak the area for 15 minutes with DI water and brush gently.

Lichen and moss can colonise the rubber seals around the edge of each panel. We treat these with a low-strength biocide spot treatment, never a roof-grade chlorine wash, because chlorine eats EPDM seals over time. Will solar panel cleaning void my warranty?

Done correctly, no. Done with a pressure washer or harsh chemicals, absolutely yes. Most major panel manufacturers (Trina, Jinko, REC, LG, Q Cells, SunPower) explicitly require cleaning to maintain warranty AND explicitly forbid pressure washing or detergents.
