How to Clean a Concrete Driveway in Sydney: A Pro's Guide (2026)

Why Sydney driveways look so much worse than the rest of the house

Driveways take a beating. They sit in full sun, they get soaked every storm, they're dripped on by car engines, walked over by every visitor, and in the Hills District they're often shaded by jacaranda or eucalypt trees that drop tannin-rich leaves that stain concrete black. Add tyre marks from hot summer rubber, the occasional oil leak, and red dust blowing in from the west, and within five years your once-fresh concrete looks like a parking lot.

The good news is that concrete is one of the easiest exterior surfaces to clean, it's tough, non-porous-ish, and it forgives almost any chemistry you throw at it. The bad news is that most homeowners try to clean it with a 1900 PSI Karcher and water alone, then wonder why they've been at it for three hours and the stains are still there. Pressure alone isn't the answer. Chemistry plus pressure is.

What kind of driveway do you have?

Cleaning method depends on the surface. Get this wrong and you'll either leave half the stains behind or eat through the surface coating.

Plain concrete (broom finish or trowelled)

The most common driveway across Sydney suburbs. Tough, takes high pressure well, and responds beautifully to alkaline cleaners. The most forgiving surface to clean.

Exposed aggregate

Common on newer Hills District homes (Kellyville, Bella Vista, North Kellyville). Decorative pebbles set in cement, looks great when clean, attracts grime in the gaps. Use a flat surface cleaner attachment, never a 0 degree pencil tip, direct pressure can dislodge stones.

Stamped or coloured concrete

Usually has an acrylic sealer applied. Be careful, high pressure or strong solvents can strip the seal and dull the colour. Soft wash with mild detergent first, low pressure rinse only.

Pavers (clay, concrete, sandstone)

Sandstone is sensitive, never high-pressure direct, never acid. Clay and concrete pavers handle pressure well, but be careful around joints, too much pressure blows the sand out of the joints and you'll need to re-sand the whole driveway.

Pebblecrete and exposed pebble

Older Sydney driveways from the 1980s-90s. Surface coating is often degraded; treat gently. Surface cleaner attachment, 2500 PSI maximum.

The 4 stains every Sydney driveway has (and how to actually remove each)

1. Black mould and algae streaks

The dark grey-to-black shadows that make your driveway look perpetually dirty even after rinsing. This is mould, mildew and algae growing in the porous surface, particularly on the southern face of the driveway and anywhere shaded by trees. Plain water won't kill it; the cells will just rehydrate and you're back to square one within weeks.

Treatment: Sodium hypochlorite (4-6%) diluted 1:4 with water plus a surfactant. Apply, dwell 10 minutes, agitate with a stiff broom, rinse.

2. Oil and engine grease stains

Black-brown smudges directly under where you park, or a halo stain from a leaky gasket. The hardest stain to remove because oil penetrates the porous concrete and doesn't come out with water. Search volume for 'concrete oil stain remover' in Australia is massive, there's a reason. Most DIYers fail the first time.

Treatment: A citrus or alkaline degreaser (e.g. Septone Auto Degreaser, Bondall Concrete Cleaner, or commercial-grade products like Hydroxide). Apply neat to the stain, scrub with a stiff brush, leave 15 minutes, then high-pressure rinse. For old, deeply absorbed stains, a poultice, a paste of degreaser mixed with kitty litter or diatomaceous earth, left overnight is what actually pulls oil out of the slab.

3. Tyre marks and rubber smear

Black or grey streaks where tyres turn or burn out. Looks like dirt but is actually thin layers of rubber bonded to the concrete by heat. A degreaser alone won't shift tyre marks; you need a citrus solvent or a dedicated tyre mark remover.

Treatment: Citrus-based solvent cleaner, agitation with a stiff plastic brush, repeat application if needed. High-pressure rinse afterwards. For heavy burnouts, sometimes only a surface grind will fully restore the look.

4. Tannin / leaf stains

Yellow-brown rings under jacaranda, gum, or where wet leaves have been sitting. Tannins are organic acids that bond to concrete and bleach won't fully shift them.

Treatment: Oxalic acid (the active in most rust remover and deck brightener products), diluted as per label. Apply, dwell 5 minutes, neutralise with bicarbonate solution, then rinse thoroughly.

Step-by-step: cleaning a Sydney concrete driveway like a pro

Step 1, Clear the slab

Sweep or blow off all loose debris, leaves, dirt, car washing residue. Move pot plants, bins, kids' bikes. Pre-water any garden beds bordering the driveway so the chemistry doesn't pull moisture out and burn the plants.

Step 2, Spot-treat oil stains first

This is the step every DIYer skips. Apply degreaser neat to oil patches, brush in with a stiff bristle, let it work for 15 minutes while you keep going. If the stain is deep (more than a year old), make a poultice: mix degreaser with kitty litter into a thick paste, lay it over the stain, cover with plastic, leave overnight. Pulls oil out of the pores like a magnet.

Step 3, Apply the main wash

Mix sodium hypochlorite with water and surfactant (4% solution). Apply with a pump sprayer, working in 4-square-metre sections. Don't let it dry on the surface, work systematically and rinse before the chemistry flashes off.

Step 4, Agitate

Use a stiff-bristle deck brush on a long handle for 60 seconds per section. The chemistry does most of the work; agitation just helps it penetrate the porous surface. Don't use a wire brush, it leaves iron deposits that rust into the concrete.

Step 5, Rinse with pressure

This is where the right tool matters. A domestic 1900 PSI Karcher will look like it's working but won't lift heavy staining. Step up to:

• 3000+ PSI commercial pressure washer with a 25 degree fan tip, OR
• Flat surface cleaner attachment (e.g. a 16 inch rotating disc), this is what every pro uses. Cleans 5x faster than a wand, leaves zero stripes, and protects the concrete from etching.

Step 6, Optional but powerful: seal the concrete

A clean driveway is great. A clean, sealed driveway stays clean for 3-5 years. After the slab is fully dry (24+ hours), apply a penetrating concrete sealer (water-based silane/siloxane is the standard for Australian conditions). Sealers reduce water absorption, slow down algae regrowth, and make oil drips wipe straight off rather than soaking in.

Can you clean a driveway without a pressure washer?

Yes, and a lot of Hills District homeowners ask us this. The honest answer: you can clean light surface dirt and even some algae with chemistry, a stiff broom and a hose. What you can't do without high pressure is shift deep oil staining or restore that fresh slab look to old concrete.

Here's the budget DIY approach if you don't own a pressure washer:

1. Sweep the slab clean.
2. Mix 4 cups of supermarket bleach with 4 litres of warm water and a generous splash of dish soap.
3. Pour onto the driveway in sections, scrub with a stiff deck brush.
4. Leave 10 minutes. Rinse with the highest-flow garden hose nozzle you have.
5. Repeat once if needed.

This will handle 70 percent of light staining. For oil, tyre marks, or driveways that have not been touched in 5 plus years, you will need to either hire a pressure washer for a day from Kennards or Coates or call in a pro. Hire units rarely have the flow rate of commercial gear, so the work takes much longer and the result is patchier, but it is doable for a single annual maintenance pass.

How much does professional driveway cleaning cost in Sydney?

For a standard Hills District home in 2026, expect:

• Single-car driveway (around 50 square metres) - usually a 1 to 2 hour job
• Double driveway with paths (around 100 square metres) - usually 2 to 3 hours
• Long acreage driveway (200 plus square metres) - half day plus, especially with stains
• Strata car parks - quoted per bay with bulk discount over 20 bays
• Add-on: oil stain pre-treatment when needed

You will see ads on Gumtree for ultra-cheap driveway specials. Avoid them. They are pressure-only, they almost never have insurance, and they leave the etched stripe pattern from a 0 degree tip that signals amateur. How often should you clean your driveway in Sydney?

For most Hills District homes, every 12-18 months is the sweet spot. If your driveway is shaded by trees (jacaranda, gum, liquidambar) or you're on a north-facing slope that doesn't see much sun, drop that to every 9-12 months. Acreage and rural properties (Kenthurst, Glenorie, Dural) often hold off until 2 years between cleans.

Signs you're overdue:

• You can see a clear tone difference between the parts under the carport (light) and the open driveway (dark).
• The driveway feels slippery underfoot when wet, that's algae, not just water.

Pavers vs concrete: a quick word

If your driveway is paved (clay or concrete pavers), the cleaning steps are similar but with two big differences. First, never use a 0 degree pencil tip near paver joints, the sand in the joints is structural and high pressure will blow it out and destabilise the surface. Second, use lower PSI and a wider fan tip. After cleaning, you will likely need to re-sand the joints with kiln-dried polymeric sand. Pavers are a great surface but they reward gentler chemistry and care.

For sandstone pavers (common around Bella Vista and Kellyville heritage-style homes), drop the pressure to 2000 PSI maximum and stick to neutral pH cleaners. Acids will etch sandstone permanently.

What about doing it for an event or selling the house?

This is the most common reason homeowners call us.
