How to Clean Windows Streak-Free in Sydney: A Pro's 2026 Guide

Why your windows always streak (and the simple fix the pros use)

The 4 streak causes (and how to kill each one)

1. Direct sunlight

This is the most common mistake. Sunlight heats the glass, and your cleaning solution evaporates before you can squeegee or wipe it dry. The dissolved minerals and dirt left behind are exactly what you see as streaks. Clean on a cool overcast morning, or on the shaded side of the house first then chase the shade around as the day moves.

2. Wrong cloth

Paper towels (Sorbent, Quilton, Kleenex Viva) shed lint that bonds to glass under static. Newspaper used to work in the 1980s but modern soy-based inks smear instead of polishing. Tea towels and old t-shirts leave lint behind. The only material that actually works for a streak-free finish is a clean flat-weave microfibre cloth, washed without fabric softener.

3. Wiping in circles

Circles smear residue across the surface instead of lifting it off. Wipe in straight horizontal strokes on one side of the window and vertical strokes on the other. If a streak shows later, you immediately know which side of the glass it is on.

4. Soap or detergent residue

Most household window cleaners (Windex, Mr Muscle, Ajax) contain surfactants that lift dirt but leave a thin film as they dry. The film attracts dust and shows as streaks within days. Switch to a 1:1 white vinegar and warm water mix, or a dedicated streak-free formula like Ettore Squeegee-Off or Unger Glass Cleaner.

How to clean windows step-by-step (the pro method)

What you need

• Bucket of warm water with a teaspoon of dish soap (just to lift dirt, not the final clean)
• Microfibre wash mitt or T-bar window scrubber
• Squeegee with a fresh rubber blade (Ettore or Unger from any hardware store)
• Two clean flat-weave microfibre cloths
• Spray bottle with 1:1 white vinegar and warm water for the final pass

Step by step

1. Dust the frame and sill first with a dry brush. If you wash dust into the cleaning water, you spread it across the glass.
2. Wash the glass with warm soapy water, agitating any baked-on bird droppings or salt deposits.
3. Squeegee top to bottom in overlapping vertical strokes. Wipe the blade on a microfibre cloth between strokes so you do not drag dirty water across.
4. Mist the entire window with the vinegar-water spray. Keep the mist light, not soaking.
5. Buff dry with the second clean microfibre, top to bottom in straight vertical strokes.
6. Run a finger across the bottom corner. If your finger squeaks across the glass, you are done. If it slides silently, there is residue, mist and buff again.

How to clean windows you cannot reach

This is the question we get most often from Hills District homeowners with double-storey homes in Castle Hill, Kellyville and Bella Vista. The answer for upper-floor windows is one of three options:

• Telescopic pure-water pole. Professional gear is the gold standard for double-storey reach. Uses purified deionised water that dries spot-free without any chemicals, so no buff is required. This is what we use.
• Magnetic window cleaner (e.g. Tyroler Bright Tools, Glider). One half stays inside, the other clings to the outside via magnets. Works for single-glazed windows up to about 8mm thick. Useful for first-floor windows you cannot easily reach with a ladder.
• Long telescopic squeegee. A good budget option for single-storey homes. You agitate the glass with a wash mitt on a pole, then squeegee it dry from the same pole. Skill curve is real but it works.
• Hire a pro with a pure-water pole. For double-storey or hard-access homes, this is genuinely the safest option. We do all of this without ever putting a ladder against the wall.

Pure-water pole cleaning (and why pros use it)

Walk past any modern professional window cleaner working on a Sydney home and you will see them holding a long carbon fibre pole with a brush head, fed by a hose running back to a backpack or van-mounted tank. There is no soap, no squeegee, no climbing. The technology is simple but powerful: tap water is run through a deioniser cartridge that strips out all dissolved minerals (calcium, magnesium, salts), leaving water with effectively zero hardness. Special cases: tinted, double-glazed, security screens

Tinted windows

Most residential window tint is on the inside of the glass. Use only ammonia-free cleaner, never vinegar (the acid degrades tint adhesive over time). Use the softest microfibre you have, no scrubbing motion, just gentle straight strokes. Replace any cloth that has touched concrete dust because abrasive particles will scratch tint film permanently.

Double-glazed windows

Modern Sydney builds increasingly use double-glazed sealed units (IGUs). They are easy to clean externally, but if you ever see condensation between the panes, do not try to clean it. Security screens

Security mesh and Crimsafe screens are the dirtiest part of any Sydney window because they trap dust, pollen and bug residue.
